Travis S. Brinster

Vietnamese-American

This selection is from a series about the cultural alienation that exists within an increasingly multicultural world. My in-laws are Vietnamese refugees who came to the US after the fall of Saigon. As their experience becomes part of the collective American experience, the ways in which one culture influences and is influenced by the other appear in a myriad of small ways. This work is about another kind of disconnection. It is a unique isolation; by virtue of the fact that the very process which brings cultures together also can create a sense of loss and strange juxtapositioning in the process. Many of these photos come from weddings and funerals in the family.
